CREATIVE CRITICAL REFLECTION 1

HOW DOES MY PRODUCT USE OR CHALLENGE CONVENTIONS AND HOW DOES IT REPRESENT SOCIAL GROUPS OR ISSUES?

  • My film has an age rating of 15, as it contains strong threat and violence.
  • Our production company name is Belvedere Studios. The storm animation and logo represents our genre of films - which are very dark with striking, disturbing imagery.
  • Our film starts with a newsflash which launches the main narrative. Crime films often have news reports for warnings, threats and investigations.
  • The first establishing shot is a lonely, dark street at night, keeping with our genre.
  • Some of our editing is done to keep up with our genre, including some CCTV footage. This is very unsettling, and keeps the audience on edge as to what will happen next.
  • Every aspect of the mise - en - scene is designed to create fear and suspense, including the first confirmed sighting of our protagonist wearing the mask.
  • One of our shots is the killer arriving at the door, and we see him look straight into the security camera. this is a chilling idea as the people in the house are never safe - the killer is disguised and has no fear.
  • The scenes inside of the house are dark - everything takes place at night time to emphasise the mystery and horror genre. The door is open, and outside you can see the dark sky, which is scary as the audience can sense what will happen next.
  • Throughout the scenes inside the house, we edited in several sudden black screens, including straight after the girl sees the killer with his knife. This creates dramatic tension, and means we don't have to show every single second and can leave it to the audiences imagination.
  • Our scene with the guitar being played fits our genre perfectly. the song being played is slow, but sounds very unsettling alongside the overlays with scenes from the killing. The killer is reflecting on his murder, and it is extremely disturbing.
  • Over the top of the guitar playing and murder overlays, we have a controlled voiceover of the killer narrating his thoughts. His final lines are 'She'll never, betray me again'. We then see a picture on his mantlepiece - the picture of the girl he took from her house just before he left. This leaves the opening on a cliffhanger - the killers final line was a strong warning and threat which leaves the audience on tender hooks, feeling disturbed and wondering what horrible thing he'll do next.
  • Throughout the opening, credits appear to present each participants role in the film.
